In the third of a series of mate health snippets, here’s something about mate and cholesterol

Mate is an institution in Argentina but yerba mate is currently flying off the shelves in other parts of the world due to its reported health perks. Mate health benefits include cholesterol-lowering powers, according to some experts.

For example, a 2009 study from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil showed drinking mate for 40 days reduced LDL cholesterol by up to 8.7 percent. The study looked at 102 people and further research would be useful but on the strength of this study it seems mate could be bad news for high cholesterol.
